Sekyere Afram Plains District is located between latitude 0° 20’ N and 1° 20’ N and longitudes 6° 52’ W and 7° 32’ W. It covers an estimated land area of 3,500.56 square kilometers. The district shares common boundaries with other districts in the region. They are Sekyere Central to the West, Sekyere East.  and Asante Akim North Districts to the South.

Besides sharing boundaries with these Districts in the Ashanti Region, it also shares boundaries with other districts outside Ashanti Region. They are Kwahu North District in the Eastern Region to the East and the Sene District in the Brong Ahafo Region to the North.

Sekyere Afram Plains District was established in 2008 through legislative Instrument (LI) 1838. It is one of the Twenty-Seven (27) districts in the Ashanti Region and among the Thirty-Two (32) newly created districts in the Country. The Administrative capital is Kumawu. The district was inaugurated on Friday 29th February, 2008. Before then, it was part of Sekyere East District.

For administrative purposes, the District is divided into two (2) zones; Kumawu and Afram Plains Zones. The Kumawu Zone is accessible whiles the Afram Plains Zone is inaccessible. Due to the inaccessible nature of the Afram Plains Zone, one has to pass through  Nkawkaw in the Eastern Region or Atebubu in the Brong Ahafo Region before accessing the Zone from the District capital at Kumawu.

The District has one constituency with 26 electoral areas and 97 polling stations. There are about 106 Communities and hamlets constituting the District. Traditionally, the district is under the Kumawu Paramountcy. Since its establishment, the district has proudly taken steps to occupy its rightful place among the districts of the country and has potentials to develop rapidly.
